Shots fired during Papal mass in Germany, bodyguard injured

UPDATED | Shots have been fired and Papal body- guard was injured at security gate just 400 metres away from where Pope Benedict XVI was celebrating mass in Erfurt as part of his three day tour of Germany.

According to reports, a man walked up to the security gate and opened fire on the guard, injuring him. The man then took off chased by police officers and locked himself inside an apartment where he later surrendered himself.

The mass continued and the Pope was afterwards escorted to the town of Freiburg where he continues with his homeland tour.
