Infrastructure Malta has reopened the underpass beneath the junction connecting Swieqi and St Julian’s after cleaning up pieces of concrete that had cracked and fallen off the top.

Infrastructure Malta said that a portion of the underpass's concrete was found to have cracked during routine maintenance on Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli in San Ġiljan. This underpass connects Triq is-Swieqi to Triq Santu Wistin. As a result, a piece of the concrete fell off.

Speaking to MaltaToday, Infrastructure Malta CEO, Ivan Falzon said that the area was subsequently closed in order to monitor the underpass, and pieces of fallen concrete were cleaned up. According to Infrastructure Malta, the area was once again opened after being certified by an architect.

Falzon said that this was simply a case of “concrete spalling,” adding that works in the area will continue.

The underpass in question was flagged many times by independent MEP candidate Arnold Cassola. The area is set to undergo an upgrade similar to that in the Kappara junction.
