Reduced occupancy rates for accommodation establishments in Malta - NSO
Decrease in arrivals and nights stayed recorded by all accommodation establishments excluding 4-star hotels in Malta in July 2011
According to statistics issued by the National Statistic Office, there was an increase of 1.1% to 146,837 reported arrivals in communal accommodation establishments when compared with July of 2010. However, the average length of stay dropped by 0.2 of a night as total nights stayed declined by 2.8%.
In Malta, the occupancy rate in other collective accommodation declined by 8.5 percentage points. All hotel categories in Gozo and Comino recorded increases in occupancy rates, especially for 3-star hotels, which stood at 73%.
When compared with July 2010, statistics released for July 2011 recorded non-resident arrivals as standing at 135,250, up by 1.4%. However, the average length of stay stood at 7.0 nights for 949,059 non-residents dropping by 3.2%.
Resident arrivals decreased by 2.9% in comparison to a 0.4 of a night increase in the length of guest night stays.
An estimation of 80.7% of net occupancy rate was made for collective accommodation establishments displaying a 1.4 % drop when compared to 2010. The majority of occupancies were recorded at 78.1% for non-residents with the remainder 2.6% accounted for by residents. The highest occupancy levels were registered by 4-star hotels at 94% with a recorded increase in occupancy of 1.3%.
The average length of stay was estimated at 6.8 nights for a total of 138, 736 arrivals in Malta. 948,498 nights were recorded showing a decrease of 0.3 of a night. An increase in the average length of stay was recorded in Gozo and Comino at 4.0 nights.
The total number of bedrooms in Malta tallied at a decreased number of 17,175,346 when compared to the previous year, along with a decreased number of bed-places. A 0.3% decrease was noted in the number of bed-places in Gozo and Comino standing at 1,699.
During the time under focus, the net use of bed-places was 81.6% in Malta and 61.8% in Gozo and Comino. Averaging at 2.1 beds per room, the number of bedrooms and bed places totalled 17.989 and 38,671 respectively on a national basis when to the corresponding quarter last year.
