Breakwater bridge installation postponed due to 'bad' weather
The installation of the bridge over St Elmo’s Breakwater has already been postponed twice due to the weather conditions.
Government said the operation “cannot commence since the sea is too rough.” The event has been moved to tomorrow morning, but could be postponed again as forecasts predict force 3 to 4 winds for tomorrow. Isolated showers are also expected.
Transport Minister Austin Gatt will be involved in the operation to install the bridge, according to a statement sent by the Department of Information.
The steel bridge, which will connect Fort St Elmo to the breakwater, was fabricated in Spain and forms part of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Project Financed by government, the bridge is expected to cost some €2.8 million. But sources have said that the costs will be higher.
Government’s original plan was to reconstruct a replica of the original bridge, removed after it was hit in 1941. However, the plan was scrapped as a lot of steel was required to recreate the Victorian bridge and was considered too expensive.
