Standup comedians ‘impressed’ by local drinking habits
A trio of international comedians expressed their ‘admiration’ for the drinking habits of the Maltese, during their routines as part of the 16th edition of the XFM Standup Comedy Show held at the Dolmen Hotel in Qawra.
The comedians – Joel Dommett from the UK, Mickey D from Australia and Jason John Whitehead from Canada – were taken to Paceville after their show on Saturday, where they experienced a culture shock of the more amusing kind.
Dommett, who confessed to getting substantially inebriated during the night (“we were taken to some place called BarCelona Lounge…”), joined in with his colleagues in jokingly referring to Malta as a ‘lawless’ country, where even the police were allowed to drink while on the job.
“It was amazing, some of the policemen even had to sit down because they were so tired after drinking,” the 26-year-old comedian, who opened the night, said.
Meanwhile, Canadian headliner Whitehead, chiming in with his colleagues’ tongue-in-cheek bafflement, put local drinking habits into an international perspective.
“We laugh at the Americans for not being allowed to drink until they’re 21, and we’re drinking at 18, but then we come here and it’s like… do you guys even get breast-fed? I bet your mums gave you wine instead of milk… ‘drink up son, one day you’ll become a police officer’,” Whitehead intoned, to laughter and applause.
The comedians were less impressed, however, by their sojourn at the Splash and Fun Water Park in Bahar ic-Caghaq, with its “dilapidated” structures and its out-of-order whirlpool.
“Basically, I now have no nipples,” Dommett said about his experience on a particularly “dangerous” looking water slide.
The comedian later posted on Twitter about the experience too, writing: “At the airport… homeward bound from Malta gig fun times. The advert for Malta should def be MALTA: DON’T GO TO THE WATERPARK.”
“Was hoping 2 find a Maltese wife while away & failed. All is not lost tho cos nxt weekend im gigging in Walton on Thames. Fingers crossed,” the comedian also wrote on the micro-blogging website.
