AD chairperson looking forward to local councils elections

Alternattiva Demokratika Michael Briguglio is looking forward for the coming local councils elections with hopes that the Green party can get elected in a number of localities.

In an interview with MaltaToday, Briguglio talks about his own personal target to see AD elected in March’s local elections.

“Everyone knows what AD stands for: environmental protection, civil rights and sustainability. We have already taken a clear stand on issues which affect residents, such as pollution and overdevelopment,” Briguglio says.

Briguglio also criticizes the Labour Party for “promising everything to everyone” and describes the move itself as contradictory: “How can you promise the hunting lobby that hunters will be protected, and then promise environmentalists the environment will be protected.”

@Firillu Kbir Dictate what? Proportional representation has nothing to do with dictating but representing the whole electorate - proportionately. In the case of 4,000 votes with one seat. It's what's happening in most EU countries. No one is accusing the Greens of dictating anything.

@David Caruana So according to your stupid reasoning to have a democratic electoral law the mere 4000 votes obtained by Alternattiva should dictate the elected government. So less than 2% of the electorate should dictate on the 98% of them electorate.

Just for the record Mr David Caruana, as I said, voting history shows that, although as you rightly said, the pn used to scar their unhappy ones with the slogan 'Vote Harry get Freddie' what was actually happening, time and time again was 'Voting Harry, getting Eddie, later Lorry'. Imagine, the PL only needed less than 800 votes from the +/- 4000 garnered by AD to win the government in 2008. Since this fact did not materialize, the PN grabbed another five year term.

@ BertuDimech "...their existence goes beyond their next-to-nothing possibility of even electing an MP" Oh you're one of those who believe what One news says. Like the blue-eyed ones who think that whatever comes out of NET is gospel. AD's proposals and integrity are solid and can trash both PN and PL, only if the people could see beyond the deceit of these 2 parties. Both PN and PL work hand in hand when it comes to ignoring the so much needed electoral reforms. Our electoral system in UNDEMOCRATIC. 1,500 votes decided who leads this country while 4,000 maltese citizens have NO REPRESENTATION in Parliament. Please explain to us how you can call that "democracy". Besides, both PN and PL are dragging their feet when it comes to a party financing law. Don't you ever ask why? Why shouldn't the people know WHO is financing these parties? I am more than sure that in the next general election, AD will put at least one seat on the government benches. A coalition government is the best thing that can happen to our country at the moment.

@ I M Shreck I have to disagree. Did you forget the character assassination on Harry Vassallo done by the PN under EFA? They use to say, "Vote Harry, get Freddie" The real picture is that you have the core voters for PN and PL and these don't really change in numbers. It's the floaters that win the election to any party. You cannot call a floater either PN or PL because floaters by nature only vote to whichever party they support during that particular time. It's the floaters that put the PN in government with a very slim majority in the last election and I'm predicting that it's the floaters of the 10th district that will give us a green seat in Parliament in the next General Election.

I think that the truth of AD's vision is to get closer to the PNs disgruntled voters by looking more distanced from the PL but not completely. It does aim at garnering some unsure laborites into its folds. But still, voting history has shown that the votes obtained by AD had caused more harm to the PL than the PN.

@Bertudimech Strangely enough, the PN say exactly the same thing. Last general election they concerted a campaign led by DCG saying "Vote Harry get Freddy"

AD only exists to take away potential votes from the PL. It's evident that they are wasting time, their existence goes beyond their next-to-nothing possibility of even electing an MP.
