Updated | Sustainable development law to be published 'in coming weeks'
15 months since the reform at the Malta Environment and Planning Authority took place, no law on sustainable development has been published yet says Labour MP.
Parliamentary secretary for tourism, environment and culture Mario de Marco said a Bill on sustainable development is being finalise and that the draft would be published in the coming weeks.
Labour MP and spokesperson on the environment and sustainable development Leo Brincat has denounced the lack of a sustainable development law, 15 months since the reform at the Malta Environment and Planning Authority took place.
“Although we were promised a new law on sustainable development that had to be passed in parliament at the beginning of the year, the Bill has not even been published for a first reading,” Brincat said.
Brincat said parliamentary secretary Mario de Marco is claiming the reason for the delay in the Bill is that the government wants to include initiatives from the upcoming Rio Summit on sustainable development.
“Whatever the excuse, it’s another aspect of the MEPA reform that has not yet taken place. Not even on paper,” Brincat said.
