Debono told Gonzi that confidence motion in government should counter abstention

Nationalist backbencher Franco Debono reveals he suggested the Prime Minister calls for a vote of confidence in government to counter abstention vote on minister,

Nationalist backbencher Franco Debono has told MaltaToday he offered Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi a way out of an embarrassing result when he abstains on a no-confidence motion against Austin Gatt tomorrow Friday.

Debono said he told Gonzi at the executive committee meeting on Monday evening, that the prime minister should immediately call for a vote of confidence in the government in the eventuality that he abstained on the Labour motion.

“I made it clear that he [Gonzi] would surely get the confidence vote because I made it amply clear that my issue concerns just one minister,” Debono said.

The Nationalist backbencher’s comments follow up on his reaction to Gonzi’s warning on Wednesday evening, in which he told the annual general meeting of the Nationalist youth movement MZPN that he expected all MPs to vote against Labour’s motion if no agreement is reached on amendments to the motion.

The PN wants to amend the motion with an apology from government. But Franco Debono has reacted by standing his ground on his decision to abstain during Friday’s vote.

He also said he would neither pen nor propose an amendment to counter the Opposition’s call for Gatt’s resignation, as had been mentioned by Gonzi at the PN's executive committee meeting last Monday.

“It is inconceivable to accept a situation where the Prime Minister decides to turn a clear issue of individual responsibility, into a matter of collective responsibility,” Debono said.

Gonzi has meanwhile called on the Opposition to have Friday’s vote postponed, and agree to the setting up of a parliamentary committee to oversee the public transport reform.

Asked for his reaction, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat said the party’s response had been lukewarm. “If Austin goes, we postpone. Fair enough isn’t it?”

Dr Debono is mirroring the thoughts and expectations of the vast majority of Arriva's patrons. Nothing more and nothing less.

Debono is trying all the gimmicks he can think of despite the fact that he sinking deeper in the hole he has dug for himself. How can he abstain from a vote on a motion to remove a minister from his post, and then vote in favour of a vote of confidence in the government as a whole which, presumably would still incorporate Austin Gatt? This is simply illogical and outright ridiculous. It is now reported that Debono has now said it himself that he is solely after Gatt's head. And how can one explain how it is possible for a parliamentary assistant (quasi junior minister) and in the PM's office if you please not assume responsibility for any measure introduced by the government? As parliamentary assistant, Debono is part of the establishment and is therefore in no position to dissociate himself from the working of the establishment; he would be criticising himself in the process which, anyone endowed with a logical mind would consider simply absurd unless Debono gives up his post. One simply is at a loss to follow Debono's strange behaviour unless it is the result of some promise he made to some of his consituents and from which he can't wriggle out. Unless he intends to quit politics, the best advice is to stop digging and try to extricate himself from this self-inflicted position. He should remember that there is such a word as loyalty to the party on whose platform he was elected.

Gonzi you look as though you`re at the other end of the stick, now you know how it feels, you even asked PL to help you out. But a hard headed PM like you doesn`t deserve help, all you did is crush Maltese families with heavy taxes and gave yourself e500 a week raise. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT GONZI !!!!!!!

How can Dr Debono on one had abstain on a motion against Dr Gatt and then vote in favour of a vote of confidence on the government??? The two do not go together as if he is voting against or abstaining on the first vote it does not make sense that he votes for the government!!! Doesn't Ausitn Gatt form part of the government and even more of the executive? It would only make sense if between votes Dr Gatt would have resigned.

PL will lose nothing by losing the vote on the motion but gains a lot by showing gonziPN for what it is , a bunch of arrogant politicians inebriated on power and want to scrape the bottom before they are booted out. I bet Franco will chicken out. . PN is dead longlive gonziPN

Dr Gonzi please placate this man. A photo of him on every street corner for 1 month a year should do but beware he might still come back for more.
