Airport’s arrivals reopened after bomb scare

The Malta International Airport’s arrival lounge had to be evacuated when unattended luggage was left in the Welcomers’ Hall.

The MIA's arrival lounge was evacuated after unattended luggage was left next to the parking ticket machine in the Welcomers' Hall.

The luggage was a laptop case, which according to the MIA's spokesman could have been left behind.

Speaking to MaltaToday, the MIA's spokesman said the incident happened at around 2:15pm. "The airport's security followed the standard procedure as soon as the alarm was raised. It is a normal procedure to evacuate the area and call in the Police and the Armed Forces of Malta," the spokesman said.

He added that precautions are always taken when unattended luggage is left lying around.

Officers from the bomb disposal unit were called in to investigate the laptop case, which was later found to be "innocuous".

The spokesman assured that no flights were affected and the area is now back to normal operations.

Police investigation is ongoing.
