Lawyer to petition for two Estonians to serve 14 year jail sentence back home
A lawyer is set to petition government to have two Estonian men, sentenced today to 14 years each in prison, to serve their terms in Tallin.
Lawyer Joseph Giglio has said that his clients merit consideration for serving their sentence in Estonia, on the fact that they have no family on the island, and one of them is deaf and dumb.
The two men were arrested in 2008 as they arrived in Malta with a flight from Tripoli.
A search in their baggage resulted in a haul of almost 6 kgs of cocaine worth more than half a million euros.
Admitting the charges to importation at the start of their trial, the two Estonians were each sentenced to 14 years in jail, and fined €35,000, which would be commuted into additional prison time if not paid up.

Funny. I am assisting a client who instead wants to serve his Estonian prison term in Malta since prison conditions are much better over here. The judgment of the First Hall, Civil Court, Il-Pulizija (Supt. Sandro Zarb) vs Alexei Kostin, which is being appealed against, gives extensive coverage of the primitive conditions in Estonian jails where inmates are expected to pay for their toilet rolls.
