FKNK suspends participation from Ornis Committee

Hunters’ federation says government is using the Malta Ornis Committee for its convenience.

The hunters' federation has reiterated that is "totally illogical and insensible" that "species can be shot and killed but not captured alive".

Government has so far refused to open the trapping season for the golden plover.

FKNK said it suspended its participation from the scientific study commissioned by Government that was to start in the coming days. It also suspended its participation from the Ornis Committee.

"We believe it is only appropriate Ornis is respected and not used by government for its convenience. Government has so far ignored the committee's recommendations on a regular basis," secretary general Lino Farrugia said.

FKNK intends to remain out of the committee until this "farcical situation" is over and the correct derogation is applied.

Government is reportedly not convinced about the conservation status of the golden plover, preventing the opening of this year's live-capturing season.

"The fact that this species is hunted and killed in several other member states during the same period, while Malta is hesitating to allow the live-capture of a relatively negligible number, renders this situation totally illogical and completely insensible to trappers' sufferings," Farrugia said.

FKNK said government has to heed the warnings and clear indicators offered by the commission.

"The lack of clear and direct action so far by Government to make good its promises and written declarations to trappers is evident in this state of affairs wherein these species can be killed but not captured alive," Farrugia said.
