Fur is murder, says Moviment Graffiti
Moviment Graffitti calls on local authorities to ensure that national, European and international legislations on animal cruelty are adhered to.
In an activity to raise awareness against animal cruelty, Moviment Graffiti said more than 40 million animals are killed each year specifically by the fashion industry for their fur. The production of a single fur coat usually includes the killing of approximately 200 animals.
"These animals are killed through highly barbaric methods and in several cases they are skinned alive," the pressure group said, adding that methods such as poisoning, strangling and electrocution are not totally effective or because of certain skinning methods in particular countries.
"Animals which are captured from their natural habitat spend long days trapped in traps and end up dying a prolonged death through hunger and elements. In a number of cases, they also end up mutilating themselves in a desperate attempt at escape."
There are also cases where animals are reared specifically for their fur: "Often raised in very bad and precarious conditions, with the aim of decreasing the costs and increasing the profit than can be made out of them."
Moviment Graffitti condemned these deaths and cruelties. "Such brutality should never be justified or permitted. We appeal to both consumers, sellers and importers to abstain from buying or promoting these products. Local authorites should demand that national, European and international legislations in this regards are strongly adhered to," the group said.
Moviment Graffitti said "coats and other fur products cannot be considered as basic human necessities. One can easily do without such products." The group said people should not contribute to this unnecessary cruelty, solely for the purpose of profit making and human vanity.
Moreover, nowadays one can easily make use of synthetic furs that do not contribute to any animal cruelty, it added.
"Fur is murder and whoever buys or promotes such products, is a direct accomplice and contributor of the senseless murder of innocent creatures."
