GRTU director assault | Radiologist witness dated Farrugia's daughter, defence reveals
Defence lawyers find inconsistencies in testimony of radiologist Anthony Samuel.
The defence lawyers of construction developer Sandro Chetcuti today attempted to discredit previous testimonies given by consultant radiologist Anthony Samuel, in the continuation of the charges brought against Chetcuti who is accused of the attempted murder of GRTU director-general Vince Farrugia.
Samuel had given extensive evidence last July during the compilation of evidence against Chetcuti, but the suspect's defence counsel questioned Samuel's integrity and accused him of exaggerating the medical results because of his alleged strong ties with the Farrugia family.
When he testified last July, Samuel admitted he knew Farrugia's family and denied denied altering the medical results.
But under cross-examination today, Samuel admitted having dated Farrugia's daughter Marie-Claire Farrugia, who is also a doctor at Mater Dei Hospital.
The defence also pushed the line that Samuel was a nuclear medicine specialist, which as an alternative to normal radiology used gamma rays for detailed bone scans. Samuel told the court that such rays show fractures that don't come out in normal X-rays.
The defence also exhibited five SMS messages between 15 March and 23 March between members of the Farrugia family. One of them, from Farrugia's daughter Marie-Claire to her father read: "Hi Pa, I've just asked Anthony Samuel consultant radiologist to do special scan on ribs. Do not worry there is no difference in treatment, but it helps court case."
The defence also said it has evidence that when the bone scan was taken on Vince Farrugia on 26 March 2010, Farrugia had actually been at the Golden Sands resort in Ghajn Tuffieha.
Since Samuel's testimony, radiologist Malcolm Crockford has been appointed by the court to study the contradictory reports by Samuel and Dr Mario Scerri on Vince Farrugia's condition after he was beaten up last year.
Scerri had told the court he disagreed with Samuel's report, and insisted that Farrugia did not suffer any fractures in the incident.
According to evidence heard in court, Chetcuti violently attacked Farrugia, punching and kicking him even after he fell to the floor following an argument between the two a year ago.
