1,500 migrants fleeing Libya never made it to Malta or Italy - UNHCR

An estimated 1,500 migrants who escaped Libya by boat during the eight month uprising are believed to have disappeared and never arrived to either Malta or Italy.

The tragic estimate was revealed by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Laura Boldrini during her presentation of the report 'Transatalntic Trends - Immigration' which was prepared by the German Marshall Fund.The report states how Malta received some 1,000 migrants from Libya, while Italy received some 28,000 over the eight months of the uprising.It also explains that 1.3 million other sub Saharan migrants migrated to neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia and were hosted in refugee camps on the respective frontiers.
