Drug victims should be helped not criminalized – AD

Alternattiva Demokratika welcomes appeal for the reconsideration of drug legislation.

A demonstration was held this morning calling for the decriminalisation of cannabis.

Alternattiva Demokratika reiterated its position in favour of the classification and decriminalisation - but not legislation - of personal drug use.

The Green Party also welcomed the appeal made by President George Abela and Caritas for the reconsideration of drug legislation in order to help drug users rather than throwing them in jail.

AD's spokesman for social policy Angele Deguara said "it was encouraging to hear that President George Abela and Caritas have also endorsed the appeal to reconsider our drug laws and to treat people who fall victim to drugs as people who need help and not as criminals."

She said in such cases, it would be more beneficial to give support and help them rehabilitate, rather than sending them to prison where their drug problem might get worse.

"We have to distinguish between drug dealers who are the real criminals and their victims," Deguara said.

AD's chairperson Michael Briguglio, said imprisonment of drug victims only aggravates problems for themselves and their loved ones.

"Unfortunately both the Nationalist and Labour Parties prefer resorting to populist rhetoric and cheap scaremongering, rather than calling a spade a spade and proposing constructive measures to avoid the criminalization of drug victims," Briguglio said.

Xifajk, AD is for decriminalizing the personal use of drugs, not all the other things you mentioned. That would be madness.

Since 'peppi of xarabank' was among those who protest to decriminalise hash, should we now bow our head down and just say 'yes'? Why this 'peppi' never attends to protests against the water & electricity bills?> Probably because he doesn't give a hoot! Well, even many maltese people gives a hoot about these people who want to legalise drugs! I think the state should NOT spend a penny more or try to rehabilitate people who didn't try to reform themselves after the first offence. The government should instead try to help people who suffer from mild depression and allow them to slowly integrate back into society, not just like the system is now, where a person who's on social assistance, could not do maybe 10 hours work weekly, or a bit more or less, because that person loses all the benefits. These people are being isolated from society by the present system. If any one has a doubt about this, why don't you ask many leading physciatrists? They will prove to you a totally different picture from what that people out there think!

Drug Victims should be help if they want help, but those who continue to abuse, drug dealers, those you abuse children, old people, thieves, rhose who abuse the power trusted to them should all go to prison. The greater the abuse the harsher the prison term. We shouldn't legalis anything that goes against human nature. Amen
