Speaking at the beginning of the yearly fundraising marathon President George Abela said Christmas is a big act of love and appealed for a bigger act of love on Boxing Day: "I appeal to all Maltese persons to carry out an act of love with other persons who need our help."

He added that everybody can contribute a little and said "who has more than others should contribute a little more. This will ensure that the Community Chest Fund is in a position to help the less fortunate."

The President's wife, Margaret said she knows the persons who need the Community Chest Fund's help closely and appealed on all persons to contribute and make this years L-istrina a success.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat also spoke at the beginning of the marathon. Gonzi said this is an occasion "in which we can make a difference in other people's lives", while Muscat said this occasion called for national unity.

Both leaders praised Abela's leadership and appealed everyone to show solidarity by being generous with those who needed the help.

What a striking contrast between Pres. George Abela and his immediate predecessor! What did EFA do in his five years of tenure? We didn't even know we had a President; he just hid and brooded in his rent-free palace, perhaps writing his memoirs and the way he managed to polarize the Maltese people. Well done, Dr Abela, you are really doing everything to erase the differences between us, though, hearing and seeing what the government side says and does, it will be a hard task to achieve .

Well done Your Excelleancy Dr George Abela, President of this little Nation but with a BIG HEART. It makes me Very proud to be Maltese when I see these people most of them in need themselves trying to help ALL those who are in need of help and support. May the Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary Bless Our Country.
