PM, wife unharmed as shots fired close to Girgenti Palace
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Mrs. Gonzi unhurt as shots were fired close to Girgenti Palace in dead of night.
Shots were reportedly fired close to Girgenti Palace at 01:45am while the Prime Minister and his wife were inside.
The Palace, situated on the outskirts of Siggiewi is the Prime Minister's official residence.
In a statement issued from Castille, it was explained that the shooter or shooters remain unknown so far.
The Armed Forces keep guard of the Palace.
MaltaToday is informed that the shots were fired from a hill close by.
Senior police officials were on site this morning, accompanied by ballistics and forensics experts.
A magestirial inquiry is currently underway.
It remains unknown if the shots were aimed at the Prime Minister's residence or if the shots left any traces on the Palace windows or walls.
The area however is known to be frequented by rabbit hunters at night.
MaltaToday is informed that the AFM guard on duty at the Girgenti Palace gate immediately informed his superiors as he heard the shots.
A number of soldiers and police officers immediately rushed to the area.
