Bulgarian Focus Information Agency quoted Bulgarian MEP Iliana Ivanova saying that Malta, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Denmark have not announced their positions yet on whether to open their labour markets to Bulgarian nationals.

The UK, Ireland and the Netherlands confirmed that their labour markets will remain closed for Bulgarian workers. Germany will open its labour market just partially.

Ivanova announced however that Italy will open its labour market for Bulgarian workers as of January 1, 2012.

She said that the Bulgarian foreign ministry and the ministry for labour and social policy in Sofia have been officially notified by Italy over country's plan to open its labour market for Bulgarian citizens as of January 1, 2012.

"On the eve of the new year the Italian government has shown a truly European and responsible position, which could only serve as an example for the rest of the EU member states. Everyone talks about integration and more Europe but Italy shows not only in words but also in action that it is open for deeper European integration. I am very happy about this," Ivanova added.
