Police are working on the theory that Duncan Zammit and Nicholas Gera had known each other, before unexplained circumstances led them to a fatal altercation when Gera entered the Zammits' penthouse early in the morning, sources close to the investigation have told this newspaper.

While police and the families of the two men have agonised over the connection between the two men, two sources say police are not ruling that the two men were acquaintancies.

"It is clear this was not a burglary," one source said. "In a situation where two men have been left dead, the key lies with the third person. The field is open, but after the autopsy, investigators are not discarding the possibility that both men must have known each other to arrive to this tragic conclusion."

Both families have however stated they are unaware of how the two men could have known each other, while sources close to the Zammits are adamant that Duncan Zammit died fending off an unexpected intrusion.

The mother of Nicholas Gera, 26, told MaltaToday her son was a "loving, family boy" and expressed her shock at how he could have been involved in the incident which left both him and 32-year-old Duncan Zammit, a father of two, dead. "We do not know the Xuereb family, so I cannot understand how the two could have known each other. My heart goes out for them as I am sure their heart also goes out for us too. Maybe it was a silly, stupid argument that got out of hand," Tanja Gera said.

"I am shocked because Nicky was not the type to get involved in such an argument and use a knife," she said.

On his part, Zammit's father-in-law Anglu Xuereb, the entrepreneur, told The Times that Zammit was a hero who died "defending [his family] from an aggressor."

Police are searching for a motive as to why Nicholas Gera, who worked the New Year's Eve shift at a Paceville restaurant on Saturday night, made his way to the Zammits' penthouse in Falcon House, Sliema early in the morning. He was reported by his relatives to have spent the night in a St Julian's bar after work.

His employer spoke highly of Gera. "He was a very shy, reserved person. He was a very good employee... I still cannot believe what happened, and none of my other employees understand the connection between the two."

Like his three brothers, Gera had been adopted from Eastern Europe by his mother Tanja. He attended St Edward's College. Other sources who spoke to MaltaToday said Gera was "very quiet" and could not understand how he could have found himself involved in such a violent incident.

Zammit and Gera were both left dead after stabbing each other in the assault. Police have confirmed there was no break-in inside the house, discarding initial reports of an attempted burglary.

Duncan Zammit (Source: Facebook)

Duncan Zammit was the father of three-month old twins, Millie and Jack.

Zammit is the husband of Claire Zammit Xuereb, the daughter of entrepreneur Anglu Xuereb and the managing director of The Palace Hotel in Sliema, which is just a few steps away from Falcon House.

The Zammits' three-month old twins were sleeping in another room when the incident happened. A source close to the Xuereb family says Zammit was in bed when the incident took place, having previously hosted a New Year's Eve party at his penthouse.

Scene of the crime police led by forensic expert Mario Scerri have established that Duncan Zammit was fatally wounded with 10 stab wounds, while Gera - who lived a few streets away on Blanche Huber street - had five stab wounds. The autopsy later found over 20 and 10 wounds respectively between stab wounds, bruises and cuts.

Neighbours who spoke to MaltaToday on condition of anonymity on Sunday morning claim they overheard arguing inside the apartment building's Block C as early as 5:30am. An hour later, screaming could be heard from the Zammits' apartment.

The same neighbours knocked on the door, but nobody answered. They then phoned the police, who later found the two men dead inside the penthouse.

Contacted by MaltaToday, another neighbour residing in Block C who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that she had been woken up by the sound of banging but originally thought it was a drunk person entering the building. "I heard a lot of loud banging coming from upstairs but when we tried to leave the apartment a policeman said there was a double murder and to stay inside. I heard the wife screaming upstairs too," the resident said.

Two French tourists staying at The Palace Hotel just up the road told MaltaToday they heard screaming early in the morning, coming from the direction of Falcon House.

Dear Catlover, i question if you are a human being or a cat to post such a disgusting comment. If you're a human, then you are a slut and MaltaToday is are irresponsible to allow such a sickening post to appear in the paper.

DEAR CATLOVER!!! ...i must say you have got soo many questions you need to be answered...y dont you think a bit about the families that have lost someone and instead of asking all these questions say a prayer for the wife who lost a husband, and saw everything in front of her , irrelevant of wat the story is , for the children who will grow up without a father and for another family who has lost a son!! ..why dont you say a prayer for all of them to be strong and be able to get through this ...instead of accusing claire of being somehow connected to gera and so on ... why dont you put yourself instead of her and imagine wat you would have done ... DO NOT JUDGE, IF YOU DO NOT KNOW CLAIRE OR DUNCAN DO NOT JUDGE.... just think about the state of mind that everyone s in and what everyone s going through

For the respect of every one.STOP comment such utter disgusting sensationalism. You should have some respect for these families

Sad situation for all involved. I feel the only person who would have a clue is Claire as she was there and the one who can speak of what conspired between her husband and gera. Two men don't end up dead over a break in. One/two stab wounds maybe.. 10, no way. There is more to this story. If the men did not know each other at all, was there a connection between the wife, claire and gera? If the fight / yelling was heard at 6:30 or earlier and the police weren't called until 7:15 what were they all doing for 45 minutes?? while two men were fighting was there no mobile phone to call for help for 45 mins?who actually called the police Claire or a neighbor? I would ask these questions. Did claire and Nicholas know each other? mobile/email checks. Was this a one off getting in through the roof or had he done it before? Why did gera head right for the bedroom? Was he comfortable with the surroundings perhaps been there before? Did Gera have a girlfriend/wife/lover ? I have my own guess and it's not nice to say and I hope I'm wrong. I hope the truth will come out. For the sake of the two men dead, their families and the poor innocent children left behind without a father. Duncan wasn't a thug neither was Gera so what's wrong with this picture.......

I dread to say what i think so i will not. This is sad and terrible for all left behind. Condolences are all one can offer.

There's more to it than meets the eye. Everybody speaks highly of Gera, yet he was in another family's flat, and with a knife. Very conflicting. I fully understand his adoptive mother's grief, and give her, and Zammit's family, all my sympathy, as i am sure all wish to do. It was an unfortunate incident that should have never happened.
