Vulgar remark lands woman with €25 fine

A woman was handed a €25 for breaching public peace, and uttering a vulgar remark to her neighbour during a futile argument which broke out with her neighbour.

M.M. had Magistrate Consuelo Herrera's packed courtroom in laughter when she explained that she told her neighbour that she was "happy to have someone to satisfy me [her]." (Ghandi lil min iserrahni).

The woman said that she said those words after her neighbour allegedly called her "dirty" and "sitting pretty" with a partner (pogguta).

The remark led the neighbour to file a police report who pressed charges for breach of public order.

Amazing: a woman makes a remark to another one and the Police are right on the case...and charging her with no witnesses even! But when two girls are attacked, dragged by the hair, beaten black and blue and insulted by two brothers simply for being gay, it takes the police 5 days to file charges despite witnesses who had called them in the first place!! WHY are the politicians not doing something to guarantee CORRECT policing?

Are you surprised that there is a backlog in court? With cases like these... it's ridiculous. Why not empower Local Tribunals to deal with such silly cases and let Magistrates work on much more decent work?

Do the Police seriously believe they are entitled to be paid overtime or additional leave when they 'dedicate' their time (and our money) to prosecute such 'events'? Shame on John Rizzo & his motley crew!

I believe that everyone agrees that our courts should have the highest respect from all. However I ask why the courts do not have a full respect towards us citizens. Let me explain. Rain or shine I had to attend court as a witness to a case. Upon arrival I saw a short notice on the board outside the hall that the case was deferred to another date. Why didn’t any of the court officials inform me and saved me the hassle to go to Valletta and abandon whatever work I had to do that morning.

How about a 50 Euro fine to the idiot neighbour for making such a stupid complaint and the sack for the officer who charged her? What an utter waste of taxpayer money. Honestly, if your entire life revolves around calling your neighbour names, you really need to get out and find a hobby.

Now, that we have a brand new Minister Of Justice, can anybody explain to me why certain individuals never turn up at court, even when the court issue a mandate? Either because of a medical certificate, or when the defense lawyer finds a non sense excuse! I had a case with someone, who apart from presenting a medical certificate, on my way back home, I saw him working on a construction site!!! And when finally after 2 years they turn up , why they aren't charge for court contempt too? Maybe Franco Debono can answer please, since he's the expert in this subject!
