The writ for local council elections was issued yesterday aftgernoon by the Electoral Commission. Elections will be held in 34 localities on 10 March. It is expected that Sliema will be the 35th locality to hold elections as the council is expected to be officially dissolved in the coming days.

According to law, the President of Malta can dissolve a local council and elections must be held within 30 days from its dissolution.

Voting documents were handed over to police in order to be distributed. The documents will be delivered by police officers starting from this Saturday.

Local elections will be held in 34 localities including Vittoriosa, Senglea, Qormi, Zebbug, Gzira, Mosta, St Julian's, St Paul's Bay and Swieqi.

In recent weeks, Alternattiva Demokratika has embarked on its local council election campaign. This week the Labour party commenced its electoral campaign by visiting a number of Labour led councils. The Nationalist Party has yet to officially start its campaign, however the party is occupied with the leadership contest to be held on 25 February.

Dear maltesecross, if you do the math you will see that there are more than 30 days until March 10. "elections must be held within 30 days from its dissolution" therefore one must wait to make the Sliema elections coincide with the other districts. Simple don,t you think. No "Machiavellian scheme" here :)

Regarding the Sliema Local Council it is reported that “According to law, the President of Malta can dissolve a local council and elections must be held within 30 days from its dissolution.” As this Council has not been dissolved yet, and the elections of the other Councils is March 10th, it is some Machiavellian scheme by the PN to dissolve it on the eleventh hour to judge their standing for the general elections in the most Nationalist district of the island?
