Nadur carnival revellers remanded in custody after assault on police officers

Three Maltese and a Russian national were remanded in custody this morning by a Gozo magistrate, after being charged with assault and injuring police officers.

The four were arrested late on Saturday night, after they allegedly confronted the police with foul language, and assaulted the officers as they ordered them to respect law and order.

Martin Cachia, 53 from Pembroke, Dragomir Ivanovich Ivanov, 37, a Russian national residing in Qawra, Kevin Micallef, 43 from Qawra, and Daniel Tonna, 28 also from Qawra, were charged by Inspector Josric Mifsud for assaulting, resisting, threatening and injuring police officers.

Micallef and Ivanov were additionally charged for drunk driving, while Cachia and Tonna were also charged for relapsing.

All four pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them by the police, but were denied bail by Magistrate Paul Coppini.

The court ordered that the four men be escorted to Corradino Prisons and be held under preventative custody.
