97 suicide attempts in 2010
Highest rates of suicide attempts were found in the 26-45 age group.
According to information tabled in parliament this evening, there were 97 suicide attempts during 2010 .
The information is based on the number of patients who received treatment at Mater Dei Hospital and the Gozo General Hospital.
Replying to a question put forward by Labour MP Silvio Parnis, Health Minister Joe Cassar said the information was gathered through the Hospital Activity Analysis at Mater Dei Hospital.
While at first glance the rate of suicide attempts appears to vary drastically between 2007 and 2011 - from nine in 2007 to 97 in 2010 and 97 again in 2011 - Cassar said the increase between 2009 and 2011 was due to increased efficiency in the data collection and how the cases were reported.
The health minister added that cases of suicide attempt are now being included under a specific category.
Between 2009 and 2011, the highest number of cases reported fell within the 26-45 age group, followed by those aged between 5 and 25.
While in 2007 and 2008 no cases were reported among those aged 66 and over, these went up to one case in 2009, eight cases in 2010 and nine cases in 2011.
