Gordon Zammit - son of a former ADT director - was ordered to remain within the confines of his apartment on Tower Road, Sliema and deposit the sum of €3,000. He also had to make a €20,000 personal guarantee. Magistrate Claire Stafrace gave the ruling.

Testifying on Monday, Police Inspector Angelo Gafa who lead the investigation, said that it is estimated that Zammit allegedly pocketed €93,000 in the scheme through which he inflated invoices for road works  and split the difference with the contractor.

According to the prosecution, the scheme allegedly swindled approximately €500,000 from Transport Malta in excess payments through inflated invoices.

The moneys  The remainder, after deduction of taxes, were allegedly kept by road works contractor Alfred Schembri and Sons Ltd.

Contractor George Oliver Schembri of Alfred Schembri & Sons Ltd together with his accounts clerk Donald Camilleri are facing similar charges, together with money laundering.

Alfred Schembri & Sons turn out to have benefitted from a total of 86 road works contracts, including eight which were awarded by direct order, costing a total €195,000.

I agree with the comments by edyjoyce that if it was your average Joe citizen that was caught with a similar crime rather than being put on house arrest he would have been put in prison right away and the key thrown away whilst because this architect also being the son of an ADT Director, is put on house arrest! No wonder 88% of 500 respondents told Eurobarometer that Corruption is part of life in Malta. And here I am, whilst working hard and paying my taxes and showing my income to the last cent cannot make ends meet and for those who plunder, pillage, rape, embezzle and break every imaginable law, they get away with it. Wow what JUSTICE we have in this country...truly exemplary!! Go figure!

ALL INOLVED SHOULD BE MADE NOT ONLY TO PAY FOR THERE MIS-DEEDS BUT TO REFUND ALL...AND NOT JUST BE LET OFF WITH A SUSPENDED SENTENCE , KEEPING THE BOOTY TO PAY OFF THE LAWYERS!

I truly wonder if instead of being an architect, son of an ADT official, Mr. Zammit had been a gardener, son of a shoemaker,he would have been released from Corradino and placed on house arrest in Tower Road, Sliema !!!!!!

This young architect owns a seafront apartment in this sought after area in Sliema! I sincerely hope that the police are thoroughly searching the background of all the transactions that could have potentially led to the purchase of this building.
