UK minister diminishes Scottish quest for independence, says they ‘would be like Malta’
An independent Scotland would resemble ‘a small country like Malta’ when it came to its significance on currency, a senior British government minister has said.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said Scotland's economy, while important, only resembled one-tenth of the UK's economy, meaning it would be an insignificant player in a currency union, it was reported today.
He compared Scotland within a Sterling union to the case of Germany, "which is seen to be a much larger player in the eurozone than other smaller countries such as Malta."

The Gozitans feel like that they are second class sitizzen. They say they are better of, if they be part of Italy than part of Malta.

Falzonalfred6: NO, Malta's vote in the EU Council, when a "qualified majority " vote is taken, does not have the same weight as the vote of much bigger countries. In fact it is given THE LEAST WEIGHTING ! Besides, the IMPORTANT DECISIONS are almost always taken by Germany and France ! Anyone who believes that Malta has the same importance and clout in the European Union, is still only dreaming the nice dreams fed to the Maltese people by MIC and the EU fanatics !!!!!! The usual reference to our PRESENT position in the EU. We were a lot better and had much more influence OUTSIDE the EU than when we became members. That's one reason why I agree with those who say that we must get out of the EU.

Seems that the Gozitans have taken the cue from Scotland. They want their own flag and anthem! Incredible but true.
•
it all depends in what context it was refered to. at times we do jump the gun with futile comments. however, one has to admire the stratigic britannic intelligence...... political prodigy beyond our political fora.
•
@festu, please read his words again, He compared Scotland within a Sterling union to the case of Germany, "which is seen to be a much larger player in the eurozone than other smaller countries such as Malta."
Nothing at all derogatary about Malta there, stating a simple fact. Please leave your misguided racism elsewhere.

Not the most tactful of comparisons, but very true.

Rt Hon Chief Secretary, Malta may be an insignificant player in a currency union but we were significant during the Libya crisis as your esteemed colleague the Foreign Secretary may confirm.
Furthermore, as our beloved the late Prof de marco used to say, we are an Independent State and within the UN fora, size has no relevance as all States have the same vote.

Let all those Maltese lackeys of the English now realise how we are regarded by our former colonialists
•
what's not said is that Scotland would be trivial for England's economy as it provides much of the oil
•
Sad but true. We have, or rather, always were inignificant to the eu :(
