Malta police help retrieve priceless antique manuscripts

A pan-European investigation led by the Maltese, Cypriot and Greek police have lead to the discovery of 18 manuscripts from the 16th Century worth €30,000, disrupting their illegal sale.

A European investigation coordinated by the European Union's anti-fraud office (OLAF) together with police forces around Europe, have led to the successful recovery of 18 volumes of stolen priceless 16th century manuscripts as they were about to be smuggled out of Italy.

A joint operation led by investigators in Malta, Cyprus and Greece led to the recovery of the manuscripts together with 459 works of art which have been under surveillance since last November.

The World Customs Union was also involved in the investigation, which supplied intelligence regarding cargo and passenger movements.

The works of art - allegedly stolen from a collector in an undisclosed country - were successfully recovered at Milan's Malpensa airport, while a number of suspects were arrested in connection to the investigation.
