Julia Farrugia appointed editor of Illum

Julia Farrugia has been appointed editor of sister Maltese-language newspaper Illum after she was appointed acting editor back in January.

Farrugia, 33, joined MediaToday in October 2006 when Illum was originally established.

She started working in broadcasting in 1997 and until now she still produces journalistic and investigative programmes. “Illum will continue growing together with the thousands of readers that continued increasing over the past few years. And it will continue to be the only independent Maltese-language which comes out with hot and exclusive stories,” Farrugia said on her appointment.

“The next few months will be exciting ones. We are planning new projects and more prizes for our readers with a particular emphasis on Gozo,” she added.

MediaToday Managing Editor Saviour Balzan said Illum had a larger following among women and young readers. “It is important that women’s perspectives are not ignored in a news agenda that tends to be male-dominated. We wish Julia more success in her work with Illum.”

Congratulations Julia. Show them all you've got girl - but don't let them compartmentalize you as a woman. You are a journalist and that should be your only qualifications. Once again - congrats on your appointment. I wish you much success.
