Finance Minister Tonio Fenech met with Commission Vice President and the Commissioner responsible for competition matters, Joaquin Almunia, to discuss the ongoing restructuring of Air Malta.

The meeting was part of the ongoing discussions on the national airline and the work which is being undertaken by the Maltese Government and Air Malta's Board of Directors to transform the airline into a viable one.

Fenech said the meeting was "positive and encouraging".

"The airline's restructuring plan is having a positive impact on Air Malta's finances. I am confident that, notwithstanding the very rigorous investigation procedure currently underway by the European Commission, the Restructuring Plan will receive the full endorsement of the Commission in the coming weeks," he said.

After examining the Restructuring Plan submitted by the Maltese Government, the European Commission launched the formal State aid investigation procedure and published the details of the Air Malta case in its Official Journal on 21 February 2012.

This development was welcomed by the Government as a significant step forward. Government said the approval process of Air Malta's Restructuring Plan by the Commission is on schedule.

Losing nearly half of the airlines's experienced staff is "positive" is it ,and that this makes the restructuring process an "encouraging" proposition does it?Happy days for all then!

Rest your minds. In a few month`s time Air Malta will be again on its way to profits. Gonzi will send again signed letters to those that remained at Air Malta to rest their minds although in this report we heard the usual words `positive and encouraging` while nobody takes the view of Joaquin Almunia!!!.
