Swieqi council demands more police to control summer rowdiness

Hamlet has grown accustomed to "bad behaviour" during summer months

The Swieqi council has asked for a meeting with Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, in a bid to secure greater police presence in its streets as the locality prepares to face the onslaught of summer tourists.

Di-ve.com reported that the council is faced with complaints every year about bad behaviour by people coming back from a night out in Paceville, particularly English-language students, who inconvenience residents and businesses with their noise, littering, public urination and minor vandalism.

Swieqi's mayor said having CCTV planted all over the place would have "limited impact", and that the only option was to have police on the beat. “We are already having talks with the police,” she said. “The problem is that in the winter, the numbers drop and the issue gets forgotten. But the summer season will soon be in full swing and we need to keep up the pressure on the authorities.”
