Paul Pace slams Mater Dei as ‘huge in size, but small in beds’
Nurses union chief Paul Pace has hit back at health minister Joe Cassar and said that contrary to the claim that some 1,500 medical staff would be needed to service an extension of the current hospital, “a simple calculation would bring this down to 250”.
Speaking to MaltaToday, Paul Pace said that the minister has failed to understand the fundamental problem inherited from St. Luke's hospital regarding bed shortages.
"If Mater Dei is four times St. Lukes footprint, the minister has forgotten that the old hospital catered for 1,500 beds, and there were still patients in corridors, while Mater Dei caters for 900 and the bed shortage is now even bigger," Pace said.
He slammed minister Joseph Cassar's remarks yesterday who ruled out every possibility of extending Mater Dei with an extra 500 beds.
While partly agreeing with the minister on the need for better working practices, Paul Pace stressed however that the MUMN has been campaigning for a number of years to have a "wholistic manpower plan" that would find a solution to the bed shortage crisis, which persists until today with a number of patients having to be placed in corridors.
