Transport Malta investigating Maltese-flagged ship fire in South China Sea
Maltese passenger ship Azamara Quest catches fire while cruising in the South China Sea
The Marine Safety Investigation Unit within Transport Malta is investigating a fire that broke out in the engine room of the Maltese registered passenger ship Azamara Quest at 8:20pm (ship time) while the ship was cruising in the South China Sea.
The ship was carrying 599 passengers. While none of them were reported injured, four crewmembers suffered injuries. The extent of their injuries is not known.
"Transport Malta is informed that the fire was contained within the engine room and was quickly extinguished. It is also reported that the ship is currently running on generator power until full power can be restored to the engine room," the transport authority said.
The Marine Safety Investigation Unit is in contact with the American-based International Safety Managers of the Maltese passenger ship.
