Broadcasting Authority steps in to improve Maltese on TV

In an effort to improve the Maltese language in the media, the Broadcasting Authority has updated its code on the use of the Maltese language.

Each television and radio station which broadcast in the Maltese language is obliged to have its own language consultant. The BA will also have to be informed of the consultant chosen by the end of May, and then approved by the authority itself.

From next October’s schedule, stations will be obliged to broadcast at least one programme every three months to improve the use of the Maltese language. The programme can be divided in a series of programmes as long as the total amounts to not less than half an hour. They also have to follow new rules and directives issued by the National Maltese Council.

In addition it is expected from broadcasters to help out their guests in the use of language and correct where necessary and be alert on good use of language in all programmes especially educational programmes or children’s programmes.
