Labour MP George Vella wrote to ambassadors on Delimara motion walk-out
Labour MPs George Vella and Luciano Busuttil have reportedly written a letter to the diplomatic corps, explaining to them the events leading up to Labour’s parliamentary walk-out on the motion against the Delimara power station contract
Nationalist organ In-Nazzjon says that the shadow foreign minister sent the letter on 12 May, 2010, to tell ambassadors “to report the events of the parliamentary session to their governments.”
The newspaper said the letter contained “the usual niceties to the ambassadors” but was replete with “twisting of facts”, “bad English”, and “and spelling mistakes”.
The letter was said to contain “militant and extreme language” that criticised the Prime Minister and the deputy Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House and the clerk of the House, and parliamentary secretary Mario Galea – the MP who mistakenly voted for the motion with the Labour opposition.
Controversy ensued during the evening’s vote on the motion, after Speaker of the House Michael Frendo did not carry the vote in favour of the Labour side. Instead, he considered a point of order by deputy PM Tonio Borg, who claimed Labour MP Justyne Caruana had also voted erroneously against the motion. This prompted the walk-out by the Labour side.
In-Nazzjon wrote that the PL has in the past used the system of informing ambassadors of similar political episodes.
