Car carrier runs aground off Livorno after Malta call
Mega vehicle transporter Hoegh Asia with 6,000 cars on board was freed this morning from a sand bank off Italy’s Livorno harbour, after running aground hours after calling at MaltaFreeport.

The Norwegian flagged, 300 metre Hoegh Asia with 20 crew on board ran aground off Livorno Harbour at 10pm and was freed from the sand bank early this morning after a lengthy operation conducted by the Italian Coast Guard.
The Hoegh Asia had just left the MaltaFreeport yesterday where it moored together with its sister-ship the Hoegh Manila which unloaded some 2,400 cars and pick-up trucks, making it the largest car transhipment operation of its type in Malta.
The vehicles are to be shipped to Benghazi in Libya.
