Despite having obtained a good result in last March's local councils elections, and having seen the introduction of divorce last year - after 22 years of lobbying - Alternattiva Demokratika's former deputy secretary and candidate for the Qormi council Henrik Piski has called it quits.

The German-Hungarian, who had made a bold move in the name of AD when he contested the Qormi council elections, has suggested that the party has become communist.

Announcing his official resignation from the Green Party to MaltaToday, Piski said he no longer felt at home within AD.

"The party has taken a direction I do not wish to follow, I have been Green since the very beginning of the Green movement in Europe and I am deeply anti-communist, anti-Marxist or whatever is close to it," the AD's former deputy secretary said.

Piski added that the press conference held by AD commemorating May Day had confirmed his decision to resign.

During the press conference, AD chairperson Michael Brigulgio had spoke at length about the need to put the working class's interests first before anything else, as class differences were growing.

"I hope that in the near future, Alternattiva will rediscover its roots, away from partisan leftist politics," Piski said.

But reacting on his Facebook wall, Briguglio didn't seem to agree with Piski's comments.

"I have no apologies to make for appealing to unions to defend working class interests before partisan interests," the AD chairperson said.

I don't think Henrik should have resigned but I can certainly feel his pain. I too feel a green party should focus on ecology and related issues, just as a socialist party should focus on socialism and related issues. Nothing wrong when the two are intertwined although I am a bit dissatisfied that the AD is (somewhat) going down the red rather than green road... I vote green because I WANTED to vote green. If I wanted to vote red, that's what I would have voted.

Henrik ist es besser spät. Ich bin damit einverstanden, dass Alternativa hat sich seit seinen Ursprüngen geändert.

'I am deeply anti-communist, anti-Marxist or whatever is close to it'. What a touching sentence of exquisite beauty.
