Debono confirms he will vote with government tonight
Nationalist backbencher Franco Debono says his issues were on ‘justice and home affairs’ and will vote with government on Budget measures because he agrees with them.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi can count on his maverick backbencher's vote in parliament tonight, who made it clear that he will vote with government as the House will resolve to approve the Budget Implementation Bill.
Speaking this morning on TVAM, Debono accused the media of speculating about his vote, and stressed that his issues with government were focused on "certain issues", namely justice and home affairs matters.
"This vote should have been brought before parliament a long time ago," Debono said, adding that this would have eliminated speculation and uncertainty which ensued in the country. "I agree with the Budget measures," he said.
"Don't blame it on Debono," the MP told TVAM, as he answered questions by presenters Pierre Portelli and Joe Mifsud on his previous statements that he was withdrawing his support to government.
Debono said that he was "satisfied" with Chris Said being appointed as justice minister, and that the Prime Minister heeded his calls for a separation of the two ministries.
However, Debono said that he seeks to push ahead with his proposed reforms in both justice and home affairs, and called for urgent action to be taken, and to have all anomalies removed for the benefit of strengthening democracy.
Regarding Parliament, Debono also welcomed the introduction of video streaming of committee and plenary.
