No comment from Falzon on amending PL motion to call for minister's resignation
Michael Falzon evasive on whether Opposition motion will be amended to call for Mifsud Bonnici’s resignation.
Shadow home affairs minister Michael Falzon has not confirmed whether he intends specifying that the Opposition is calling for the resignation of home affairs minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici, in its motion of censure against the minister.
The motion was tabled in December 2011 before Mifsud Bonnici lost the justice ministry in a reshuffle.
Falzon was asked whether he will be amending the motion if Labour is asking for Mifsud Bonnici's resignation: "Give it some time," Falzon told the press.
He was then asked whether he could guarantee that the motion will be left unchanged. "I have no comment to make," Falzon said.
The motion filed by Labour MPs and shadow ministers José Herrera and Michael Falzon did not include any mention of calling for the resignation of Carm Mifsud Bonnici, who retained home affairs when justice was split from his ministerial portfolio.
But after Franco Debono broke ranks with the PN when the cabinet reshuffle in January excluded him from the justice minister's post, the game has since changed: if Debono votes in favour of an Opposition motion that ends up in Mifsud Bonnici's resignation, the Prime Minister may very well consider going for elections.
Opposition leader Joseph Muscat has brushed off suggestions that Labour's motions to force the resignation of home affairs minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici and the Permanent Representative to the EU Richard Cachia Caruana, are directly inspired by Debono's open rebellion.
Mifsud Bonnici has insisted the Prime Minister has full trust in him. "I became a minister because the people elected me. The Prime Minister appointed me to this position and the prime minister has trust in me," Mifsud Bonnici said.
Mifsud Bonnici has come under pressure by Debono and the Opposition over the stewardship of the justice and home affairs ministry, before it was split and the justice portfolio awarded to Chris Said back in January.
He was also appointed Leader of the House, and as government grappled with Franco Debono's alleged withdrawal of support, Mifsud Bonnici successfully managed to postpone crucial votes such as the Budget Measures bill, which has since passed with Debono's vote.
