Dubai's anti-drug officials have officially revealed that it was them who tracked a 140 kilogramm cocaine shipment across international waters, which eventually were seized at the Malta Freeport three weeks ago.

The General Department for Combating Drugs in Dubai announced that it played a key part in busting a major attempt to smuggle cocaine via Malta.

Major General Abdul Jalil Alasmoa, director of the Drug Enforcement Administration Dubai said the department had received information that the drugs were loaded on a container ship coming from a South American port, and passing through ports in Asia and Africa before reaching Jebel Ali in Dubai.

The department in Dubai formed a working group to track the container and despite an error in the number of the container.

"The team succeeded in correcting the information received from the container and was able to follow her in other ports," Major General Abdul Jalil said. The drugs were hidden inside machines used to make olive oil.

The Dubai General Directorate for Drug Control received letters of thanks from US Consulate General in Dubai and the Maltese Consulate.
