Former PN mayor acquitted by courts over council laptop matter
Zebbug Gozo former Nationalist mayor Charles Saliba has been cleared of all charges relating to the alleged misuse of the council’s laptop computer.
In a judgment handed this morning by Magistrate Edwina Grima, the former mayor was cleared of embezzlement and misappropriation charges, which had also led him to resign from the PN.
Charles Saliba, 56 of Zebbug Gozo, was arraigned in January 2010 after being investigated over the alleged misuse of a laptop computer belonging to the council.
While Saliba never denied using the computer, Magistrate Edwina Grima noted that the police failed to produce any evidence that the computer was being used without the council secretary's knowledge.
"Besides hearing evidence that the computer was registered as a council asset, the council secretary knew about the mayor's use," the court noted, adding that what was odd, is that who investigated the case dismissed the fact that a laptop computer is specifically made for use anywhere and can connect to the internet via wi-fi technology.
