Terribile quits as secretary to the President over claims of mismanagement

The secretary to the presidency has resigned his post following weeks of reported unrest within the presidential palace, over issues relating to alleged irregular administrative procedures

Olaph Terribile has resigned as secretary to the presidency after a fall-out with other senior aides to President George Abela, who were reportedly warned many times to follow standard procedures and financial regulations. Terribile, who insisted on a “no comment” when contacted on Saturday, is a veteran civil servant who has served in the Foreign Office for more than 30 years: many of which were spent in diplomatic missions overseas, including Beijing, London and Riyadh.

He was understood to have insisted with other staff members who don’t have any civil service experience to “get their act together” and not to put the Presidency into jeopardy. Senior government sources told MaltaToday that finance ministry officials had brought to the attention of the Office of the President that “financial regulations must be followed at all times,” in a clear reference to a series of purchases that were recently made by the Palace.

MaltaToday is informed that Terribile had done all he could to protect the Presidency, but that his warnings were repeatedly ignored.
