Government grants use of street furniture costing €36,000 to Merchant Street establishments

Government approved the spending of over €36,000 on tables, chairs and umbrellas in Merchant Street which will be used by the food and drink establishments which ply their trade in busy Valletta street.

Sister newspaper Illum reports how the total expenditure of 36,704.70 was absorbed by the government by means of the Rural Affairs Ministry, and is intended to be paid-for over time by the food and drink establishments who will be making use of the street furniture bought.

This was confirmed by a spokesperson for Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino, who however did not provide information as to the rate at which the establishment would be reimbursing government for the expenditure which they will be directly benefiting from for commercial purposes.

Illum additionally reports that the Merchant street establishments will be the only ones to benefit from such installations of street furniture for use by commercial enterprises, as Government did not seek permits for similar initiatives in other Valletta streets.

I wonder if anyone knows who the ultimate beneficiaries of these catering establishments' profits are? May I ask if practising politicians are allowed to invest in commercial establishments, in whatever indirect manner?

Why should we pay for them? They are doing business so they should be the ones who pay. Isn't this illegal State aid according to EU regulations?
