Bartolo sets straight record of criticism against judiciary

One of the Opposition’s most forward-looking, proactive, and popular MPs, Evarist Bartolo talks to MaltaToday to set the record straight on the criticism he recently levelled against the judiciary.

In an interview with MaltaToday’s sister paper Illum, Evarist Bartolo explains his motivation behind the criticism he recently levelled against the judiciary system, criticism that the PN Party in Government has become fond of quoting.

In an interview, Bartolo defends his criticism, insisting that both Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and his administration are mis-quoting him, and draws attention to how both the Government and the Police Force mishandled the Nicholas Azzopardi incident.

He reveals how Gonzi’s administration burned bridges with the Azzopardi family over the way the issue was handled, despite the fact that Nicholas Azzopardi himself was a passionate PN party supporter who not only attended every mass meeting held during the 2008 electoral campaign, but was also one of those injured during the Tal-Barrani political incident in 1986.

Throughout the interview, Bartolo insists that there remain unanswered questions regarding the investigations into Nicholas Azzopardi’s death while in police custody, and calls for a more serious approach in how justice is handled by Maltese authorities.
