George Borg Olivier offered Malta as a nuclear weapons base
Britain’s National Archives has released official papers on a 1964 Cabinet meeting, which discussed Prime Minister George Borg Olivier’s offer to store nuclear weapons in Malta for the British Forces.
The offering of Malta as a nuclear weapons base was put forward just two months before Malta was granted independence, The Malta Independent reported.
It is also believed that Dr. Borg Olivier was prepared to conceal the truth behind negotiations with his fellow colleagues in the Maltese Cabinet, according to the newspaper.
Dr. Borg Olivier drafted a confidential letter in which he claimed that he was willing to write to the Colonial Secretary Duncan Sandys, who was present at the meeting, about the defence agreement that was to form part of Malta’s Independence settlement.
The Malta Independent said that Sandys had commented that Britain was not expected to issue a response to the letter. Additionally, the letter would have no legal effect or affect the agreement in any way.
