EU funds' suspension will continue until Brussels assured of proper management

The provision of funds for EU education programmes, such as ERASMUS, is still suspended, and is due to remain so until the European Commission feels confident that the funds are being managed correctly.

In response to a Parliamentary question, by Member of European Parliament Louis Grech, European Commissioner for Education Androulla Vassilou said that the suspension of programmes on 7th May 2010 was due to the “lack of proper management according to the standards required”.

Vasillou also said that misconduct on behalf of the Ministry of Education in Malta, together with the relevant national agencies and authorities involved, caused the funds to be suspended.

Grech had asked the Commission if it could provide the students and organisations affected with help, say when the suspension would be lifted and make alternative arrangements to assure beneficiaries that they will benefit from the program.

In response, Vassilou said that alternative arrangements could not be provided whilst the problems identified by the Commission are still unresolved. She avoided mentioning the precise date when the suspension would be lifted, and that this would only happen when the Commission is reassured of proper management.

So, MEP Louis Grech is trying to amend for the misconduct on behalf of The Ministry of Education. MEP'S David Casa and DR. Simon Busuttil PLEASE NOTE.
