Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs clarifies reports on tuna farming

The Fishing Control Division within the MRAE says that controls on tuna fishing are carried out according to strict ICCAT rules.

The FCD said that these controls include independent observers on ships which carry out tuna farming in strict observance of international regulations.

The division said that in the case involving the Sea Shepherd, the Maltese authorities confirmed that the tuna farming ship had all the necessary documentation as required by law.

The division stressed that that the Sea Shepherd association is not a regulatory authority and thus it had no right to take the law into its own hands on the basis of suspicion. It urged the association to report its suspicions to the international regulatory authorities regulating tuna farming.

Controls?! Just as much as they control the pollution generated from these farms. Over a decade ago Pullicino had declared that all fish farms will be relocated far out miles away from the shore... to date they have not moved but mushroomed even further and the pollution continues to riun our once pristine bays. In the meantine Pullicino was reported to have gone on a yachting trip with one his tuna operator friends and lo and behold the previous MEPA chairman! Need one say more....?
