Former Labour Prime Minsiter Dom Mintoff, 95, has registered some improvement but his condition remains critical, Mater Dei Hospital said in a statement.

Mintoff, who next month turns 96, was admitted to the hospital's ITU in critical condition on Wednesday where he received immediate treatment at the Resuscitation Area of the Accident and Emergency Department.

"[Mintoff] is now in his second day of treatment at the Intensive Therapy Unit where he is being managed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of intensive care physicians and nurses, cardiologists and respiratory physicians," the hospital said in its latest update.

Five months ago Mintoff was treated for heart failure and a severe chest infection. Last year, Mintoff was admitted to hospital several times.
