Suspended sentence for man who bound girlfriend for two days after telling him she was leaving
Suspended jail term for man who kept his girlfriend bound to a chair for two days after informing him that she was dumping him.
David Azzopardi, 23 of Senglea was handed a one and a half years jail term, suspended for three, after he was found guilty of arresting his girlfriend, injuring her with a knife, threatening her with death and breaching public peace.
Azzopardi was arrested in 2008, after he had bound his girlfriend who told him that she was leaving him. He kept her tied for two days.
Magistrate Miriam Hayman, who handed judgment said that while the court noted Azzopardi's "difficult and turbulent" childhood, which caused him attitude and anger management problems, these were no excuse for his actions.
"Your behaviour is not acceptable in society," Magistrate Hayman told Azzopardi, adding that besides imposing a suspended jail term, she was placing him under a supervision order for a year-and-a-half.
Azzopardi was also ordered to attend programmes on domestic violence and anger management.
