The Court noted the accused's “difficult and turbulent” childhood had caused him attitude and anger management problems.
The Court noted the accused's “difficult and turbulent” childhood had caused him attitude and anger management problems.

David Azzopardi, 23 of Senglea was handed a one and a half years jail term, suspended for three, after he was found guilty of arresting his girlfriend, injuring her with a knife, threatening her with death and breaching public peace.

Azzopardi was arrested in 2008, after he had bound his girlfriend who told him that she was leaving him. He kept her tied for two days.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman, who handed judgment said that while the court noted Azzopardi's "difficult and turbulent" childhood, which caused him attitude and anger management problems, these were no excuse for his actions.

"Your behaviour is not acceptable in society," Magistrate Hayman told Azzopardi, adding that besides imposing a suspended jail term, she was placing him under a supervision order for a year-and-a-half.

Azzopardi was also ordered to attend programmes on domestic violence and anger management.

Great, is this how protected people are in society? Is this the kind of society we are trying to have and emulate? This man is clearly dangerous and aggressive and the victim has undergone a traumatising experience due to this man's behaviour. Difficult upbringing is not an excuse! How safe can Malta be with such people on the loose? This is the kind of behaviour we should be discouraging and focusing on eliminating... not skinny dipping and marijuana-smoking!!
