MEPA turns down application for ODZ fireworks factory in Rabat
MEPA has ‘honoured’ the Prime Minister’s pledge of zero tolerance on ODZ development by turning down a proposed fireworks factory in Wied il-Qlejja in Rabat, a short distance from the Chadwick Lakes recreational area
This is the second ODZ fireworks factory turned down in the space of a few weeks following the decision to turn down another controversial application in Tas-Sanap in Munxar, Gozo.
MEPA’s development control commission has turned downthe application presented by the Ghaqda Muzikali Santa Marija in Wied il-Qlejja, which was represented because the proposed location of the proposed fireworks factory was deemed to have considerable scenic value and would conflict with the Structure Plan policy on protecting Rural Conservation areas.
The Malta Resources Authority had objected to the proposed development in view that the site lies in close proximity to Tellerit Borehole, which is used for the extraction of water.
The Department of Agriculture also objected to the development of a fireworks factory since it would create an negative impact on neighbouring arable farmers.
The Rabat council also has plans to develop an eco-tourism project in the area and is currently engaged in talks with the government to establish Wied il-Qlejja as a national park.
MEPA is still faced by a number of pending ODZ fireworks applications.
