Ismail Tirso, a Turkish national has been imprisoned for 25 years and slapped with a €100,000 fine, after jurors found him guilty of importing 11.5 kilogrammes of heroin.
The haul, worth over €1 million, is considered to be the largest haul ever by Maltese customs and police. Tirso was arrested in October 2007 at Malta International Airport shortly after he arrived on a flight from Istanbul. The drugs were hidden in a double-bottom of his suitcase. In passing judgement, the Court also considered the fact that Ismail Tirso was also found guilty of conspiracy to traffic drugs, importation and possession.
