Yacob Teklesenbet Zeweldi, an Eritrean national, was remanded in custody this afternoon pending sentencing, after pleading guilty to having smashed his car on Hal Far Road two days ago, injuring eight people, including a five-month old baby, and a one-year-old toddler.

The victims were injured while standing next to a fruit and vegetable vendor in Hal far.

The other six victims include two women and four men. The two women, one of 27 from Somalia and another 32 from Nigeria, both residing at Hal Far, suffered light injuries.

A 68-year-old man from Tarxien, a 40-year-old man from Attard and 20-year-old Somali residing in Hamrun all suffered grievous injuries. A 60-year-old man from Zurrieq suffered light injuries.

Addressing the Court, Police Inspectors Kevin Pulis and Carol Fabri said that the Eritrean consented to taking a breathalyser test, which findings confirmed the accused was not under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile, a Magisterial Inquiry into the accident is expected to be concluded this week.

Assisted by an interpreter and lawyer Renzo Porsella Flores who appeared as legal aid, Zeweldi pleaded guilty to reckless driving charges, and causing grievious injuries to three people.

The case has been put off for sentencing on October 3.

Now maybe he will be sent to prison ( if he is found guilty ) and spend time there feeding on our backs. That`s what you get for sheltering these clandestines.

The questions remain: did this man have a driving licence and was he insured?

Why should he be entitle to legal aid? If he has enough money to buy and run a car, he has enough money to pay for his own lawyer. The same applies to any Maltese person in similar circumstances. A means test should be carried out on those requesting legal aid.
